League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational

Every year, through a huge number of League of Legends tournaments across the world, the best pro and amateur players battle to be the very best in LoL. But only the very best get to play for the major teams at the major tournaments and the League of Legends midseason invitational is one of THE most defining League of Legends tournaments of the season.

It’s a tournament organised by Riot Games between the spring and summer splits of this 2017 season and takes place this year in beautiful Brazil from April 28th to May 21st. The prize pool this year is a massive $250,000- broke down, that’s: $100,000 to the 1st placed team, $50,000 for second place and $25,000 to 3rd and 4th and of course, MSI results really affect a team’s standings.

The format of the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational

The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational features 13 of the best teams from around the worlds 13 main League of Legends regions: South Korea, North America, Europe, China, Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau, Brazil, Latin America North, Latin America South, Turkey, Oceania, CIS/Russia, Japan and Southeast Asia.

The teams are invited based on previous wins and seeded for the League of Legends Mid Season Invitational based on results from the last two years of MSI and World Championship results. Three teams are auto-seeded to the group stage: South Korea, China and Europe due to their consistently high performances throughout the last two years. The other ten teams compete in the play-in with North America and TW/HK/MO teams starting in Round 2.

The Play-In Stage: April 28-May 1, May 3-4, and May 6 – São Paulo

Round 1:
8 teams are divided into two groups of four and play a series of double round robin matches, all played as best of 1.
Pool 1: RED Candis (Brazil), Virtus.pro (CIS), Marine Esports (Southeast Asia), and the winner of the TCL/2017 Season/Winter Playoffs (Turkey.)
Pool 2: Rampage (Japan), Lyon Gaming (LatinAmerica North), Isurus Gaming (LatinAmerica South) and Dire Wolves (Oceania.)
Round 2:
Winners of Pool 1 and 2 are randomly paired against the North America and TW/HK/MO teams whose qualification is finalised in late April. Round 2 matches are played best of 5. The two winners automatically progress to the group stage. The losers progress to Round 3.
Round 3:
This is another best of 5 where the winner progresses to the group stage.

Group Stage: May 10-14 – Rio de Janeiro

The group stage features 6 teams; the winners of round 2 and round 3 matches plus South Korea, China and Europe. Group stage matches are played as best of 1, double round robin with the top 4 of the group progressing to the knockout stage.

Knockout Stage: May 19-21 – Rio de Janeiro

4 teams battle in a best of 5 match, single elimination bracket. The top 4 finishers of the tournament will get the top seeds for the 2017 World Championship Group Stage in China from September to November.
