Team Dignitas are a British based esports organisation, and are founded in 2003. Originally born from a combination of Battlefield 1942 clans Legion Condor and Sweden Kompanix, the organisation expanded in 2004. Adding more teams to the group, and registering as a company (Team Dignitas Ltd). As well as their League of Legends team, Team Dignitas operate a number of different teams in a host of other games, including CSGO and FIFA. Despite its British origins, and its British managing director, Michael ‘ODEE’ O’Dell, the team has a truly international roster of players and compete on the North American League of Legends circuit.
In September 2016, it was revealed that NBA basketball team the Philadelphia 76ers had acquired a controlling stake in Team Dignitas. This has given the esports pros a certain amount of flexibility whne it comes to team roles, and after suffering numerous complications with past rosters, multiple players were forced to alternate their roles.
Junglers became top-lane, and vice versa, which must have felt like a real hassle at the time. They’ve come out of the struggles a stronger team though, and now every member of Team Dignitas must feel like they’re able to play anywhere in the arena.
Branding & Sponsorship
The Team Dignitas logo is a distinctive grey and yellow alien’s face, while the team jersey is black and yellow. Grey is also used in some of the team’s branding, and in their digital wallpaper. The team has a number of sponsorship deals in place, including with Twitch TV, as well as with Alienware, TPLink, Corsair Gaming, Meta Threads and Killer Network Supremacy. Team Dignitas views itself as an iconic brand on the esports scene, and makes much in its publicity materials about its ongoing quest for excellence. The organisation is also a member of UKIE, the governing body of the British Interactive Entertainment Industry.
Team Roles, Expertise, Divisions
The Dignitas LoL team has a cosmopolitan and international flavour, with players coming from several countries. With Korea widely recognised as home to some of the world’s top LoL talent, it is perhaps not surprising that Team Dignitas have three Koreans on their current roster. The team’s top-laner is Kim ‘Ssumday’ Chan-ho, an aggressive player known for his ability to kill opponents even when under extreme pressure. The roles of jungler and mid-laner are also filled by Koreans, in the shape of Lee ‘Chaser’ Sang-hyun and Lae-Young ‘Keane’ Jang. Completing the line-up is Canadian Benjamin “LOD” deMunck, who is the team’s AD-Carry.
Roster & Achievements
In 2017, the Team Dignitas LoL team managed to finish sixth in the final standings at the LCS North America Spring Split, and in fifth/sixth at the LCS North America Spring Play Offs. Their last outright tournament win came in 2012, when they won the LoL Pro Invitational Prize Finals, taking home a staggering $20,000. Tournament wins have eluded them in recent years, the reasons for which have provoked some interesting discussions on Reddit.
